Dark Chocolate & Red Tart Cherry Energy Bites


I’ll never be one of those people with a gut of steel who can exercise on an empty stomach. If I don’t eat a little something beforehand, I’ll get light-headed on my run, or Jillian Michael’s will kick my butt even more than usual. I’m of the mindset that it’s better to eat a few extra calories and have the energy to workout harder over limiting your workout efforts due to a lack of energy. I always opt for real food to fuel my exercise, and these versatile little bites of oaty goodness are a perfect all-natural energy source; eating two is the calorie and carbohydrate equivalent of eating a package of energy gel. Plus, they’re sweet, salty, and just a little tart from the dried red cherries.


Oats and dates provide carbohydrates, plus red tart cherries are packed full of antioxidants and help fight inflammation. The peanut butter balances out the carbs with some healthy fat, but not enough to upset your stomach on a run. Oh, and there’s dark chocolate chips mixed in too, because let’s face it–chocolate makes everything better.


No refrigeration is required, which makes these on-the-go morsels a great travel or hiking snack option too. Just be careful, these sweet things are addictive.




{Dark Chocolate & Red Tart Cherry Energy Bites}

A portable and compact energy source to fuel all your activities–whether it be running, hiking, or just getting through the rest of your work day.  




1.5 cups quick oats

1/2 cup packed Medjool dates (about 8 dates)

1 tsp vanilla

1/4 cup dried red tart cherries (for a cheaper dried fruit, cranberries work well too)

1/4 cup all natural peanut butter

1/4 cup dark chocolate chips

1/4 cup water
1/2 tsp sea salt


1. In a food processor or high-powered blender like a Vitamix, blend quick oats until it resembles flour; pour flour into a mixing bowl.

2. In your food processor or blender combine dates (make sure you removed the seed) and vanilla and blend until a paste forms; add in remaining ingredients and blend until a sticky dough forms.

3. Combine dough with flour and mix together until oats are fully incorporated. Don’t be afraid to get your hands in there!

4. Roll into 24 bites. They don’t need to be refrigerated, but you can if you want them chilled.


Nutrition per bite:  52 cal, 1.5 g fat (0.5 g sat fat), 9 g carb, 1 g pro, 1 g fiber, 47 mg sodium
